Animation

The creative industry is one of the most exciting industries about!  Not only because of the constant technology advances, but because it is always open to new ideas in which the possibilities are endless!

When I think about animation, motion pictures are what first comes to mind.  This method of displaying animation is the most common used today.  Successful films such as Ice Age, Shrek and the recently award-winning Up created by Pixar are just a few films that require a great deal of effort and skill in design.

However, it is not only in the film industry that animation has changed vastly over the years.  Animation has also made a huge contribution to gaming technology.  It is when playing games such as Guitar Hero, Metal Gear Solid and The Sims for the PS3 and other game consoles that the light of these advances become particularly astounding!

In the gaming industry, animation is core and about enhancing the image on screen to create the best and most lifelike sense of reality for the gamer.  Without animation we would not have any need for games consoles or cartoons like Scooby Doo!

There is millions of Animation courses out there, from 3D Computer Animation to Fine Art and Graphic Design!  Glasgow Met is just one College that offers a range of Animation courses.  For example, the 3D Computer Animation course includes subjects such as Character Modelling and Movement Studies.  For enquiries about Animation courses offered at the Glasgow Met or if your require a prospectus, please email  enquiries@glasgowmet.ac.uk.

Don't worry! If you are looking for a more advanced course then look no further than here: http://www.gcu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/graphic-design-for-digital-media-8641.php?loc=uk.  Glasgow Caledonian University offers a BA in Graphic Design for Digital Media which also includes fun elements such as Interactive Media and Web Design!

So, if you think you are talented enough for the creative industries whether it be your skilled in creating short films or making music videos, why not enter into the British Animation Awards (BAA)? BAA covers all the creative industries in the UK, from  commercials to new technologies.  Students are encouraged to submit their work here and competitions are held every two years. To be kept informed about upcoming competitions, join the BAA mailing list at info@britishanimationawards.com.  The next award ceremony will be held on Thursday the 8th of April, 2010, so get cracking and creating!
