Art

Art is a great outlet for expressing ourselves and covers all sorts of things: from ballet to theatre to animation and film.  As an art-form - film has always been what suited me creatively.  I've always loved writing and reading stories and film, for me, is the best method of storytelling as we can add the visual element we lack in other art-forms like music.  I love transferring an idea into a visual activity and the same can be said for ballet - storytelling through movement - or even in photography - storytelling through pictures.  All these activities are described as art-forms, but there are other jobs such as an Arts Administrator or Arts Exhibition Organiser which are fun too.

While an Arts Administrator has the job of planning and organising cultural activities such as the Edinburgh International Festival, as well as concerts and tours.  On the hand, an Arts Exhibition Organiser set up displays of art in galleries, museums and other venues.  Both jobs require excellent planning and organisation among other skills such as being able to remain calm under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.

A lot of people are useless when in comes to academic things, but art is one thing that can't be right or wrong as it is subjective and what I see in a painting may be completely different to what you see.  The same goes for other art-forms like comedy.  I have always been a fan of comedy act Lee Evans as his act is physical and obvious while other acts such as Eddie Izzard include material requiring more thought.

There are many jobs linked to art which aren't as obvious, for example, an Arts Therapist.  Lots of dyslexic people are very successful in the creative industries and an Arts Therapist uses art to help people who have special learning needs to express themselves.

However, becoming an Artist such as the late Picasso (whose painting recently sold for over £70 million - an auction world record!) can be just as rewarding!  So, if it's an Artist's reward you're after then Langside College offers a HNC in Art and Design which includes everything from sculpture to painting.  Check out http://www.langside.ac.uk for details on how to apply or http://www.dundee.ac.uk for a more advanced course.

While an Art degree is good start towards a job such as an Arts Administrator or Arts Exhibition Organiser, this sort of job can also require an Events Management degree.  See http://www.glasgowmet.ac.uk for more info.
