Becoming a fireman used to be every little boys dream - apart from those wanting to be astronauts or pilots or something like that. But for every boy wanting to keep his feet on the ground, saving lives and fighting fire seemed like the heroic, brave dream for many.
Fortunately now it’s not just boys that share that dream, after all, the job is far too important to exclude girls!
Calling all young people...Would you like to make a difference in your community?
We are all extremely grateful to fire fighters whenever something scary happens and you’re left wondering how close you were to going up in smoke! And it’s not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination; it takes stamina, strength and more importantly the ability to think on your feet!
Take the advice of Lewis Ramsay, the current Assistant Chief Fire Officer of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue; he’ll tell you that working in this environment requires a good set of values and most importantly teamwork!
If any of these qualities sound like you, you might be the next Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.
The Chief Fire Officer looks after all areas of the service, of which there is many; partly why teamwork is so vital. If you think about it, the organisation depends on the smooth running of administration as well as the mechanics involved with keeping the actual machinery in top nick!
But it's not all flames and smoke; Strathclyde Fire & Rescue also have a duty to serve the community by visiting homes and schools and ensuring they have smoke alarms. That’s basically the work carried out by people like Eddie Kelly, who commits his good humour and good nature to keeping the community safe.
There are a variety of ways that you can go about gaining experience within this line of work. Especially as a young person with plenty of time on your hands, am I right? Fire and Rescue takes on volunteers for a variety of different roles, which is a great way to kick start your career in the field.
