It’s every little girl’s dream isn’t it? You know the one about looking gorgeous, mature and being adored by everyone...I say little girl but frankly it never really goes away does it!
But one thing that probably never occurred to most of us as little nippers while we were having these perfectly achievable fantasies about ourselves, that it’s a highly creative talent required to achieve that stunning look. We can’t just throw on a man’s shirt and instantly achieve the easy-natural-artistic glow that other girl’s somehow pull-off effortlessly.
Calling all gifted style gurus, will you please teach me your ways!
The truth is, any hot model you see strutting their stuff in magazines or TV have all got a secret companion – a fashion designer. Someone who dresses them; what a privilege! I know I’d love that, just every morning some fashion genius picking out the right style for me – which aint easy let me tell you!
‘WINDOW DRESSERS REQUIRED – APPLY WITHIN’ sound familiar? All the top quality fashion stores are always screaming out for talented individuals who have an eye for fashion. What a great student job to have while you’re studying for that designer degree at Glasgow Caledonian or even Glasgow School of Art, how very impressive!
And that’s only the start. Maybe you’re not arty enough to actually design the clothes, but just putting a good outfit together some might say is even more challenging. You have to make do with what you’ve got, not to mention have budgets to work within.
But just think...Who dresses the rich and famous? Imagine choosing the clothes for BAFTA Awards, or the Oscars!!!
Sounds like a pretty glamorous life to me, but just like the rest of the best careers, you don’t get anywhere without determination and some hard work. Fashion and design is a highly competitive industry, it’s not just the aspiring models that have got it tough.
Fashion is a cultural matter. It’s a great idea to develop your understanding of different cultures around the world so that you can incorporate exotic styles into your unique designs. It is also a historical matter, just think about how clothes and style has developed – it’s thanks to 16th Century Spaniards that we are all wearing corsets!
So don’t let anybody tell you shopping is a waste of time, it just may be the start of a glittering career, as you stroll around ‘window shopping’ you’re secretly bagging some inspired ideas for the next striking outfit.
