‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated’. At least that's what the famous Indian Philosopher Mahatma Ghandi believed.
In many ways working with animals can be similar to working with people: a patient and caring individual would be best for this job. In veterinary work you will need some type of veterinary degree. Boasting some of the best teaching facilities in Scotland at their Animal Care Training Centre, Barony College offers a HND in Veterinary Nursing. Check out http://www.barony.ac.uk/Courses/CourseDetails.aspx?pid=81&ppid=35 for more details.
In most jobs you will look after the animals: clean them, feed them or even train them depending on what you want to do. However, there are many other jobs where you can work with animals other than being a vet. Why not become an Inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)?
The SPCA are concerned with the welfare of animals and investigate complaints about the possibility of ill-treatment. If you would like to be involved with the SPCA (think of that CV!) then please see http://www.scottishspca.org/getinvolved for more info.
It is said that at least one endangered species dies out every year. There are many reasons for this, but usually this happens due to changes in the environment or lack of that species breeding which can result in extinction.
Owning a pet tortoise I know the responsibility of looking after a pet. It can at times be tough as we communicate differently, but the joy I receive in looking after Shelly is a reward in itself. It's scary to think that she could outlive me considering some tortoises can live longer than 150 years old!
Many animal lovers now breed animals to aid in the survival of that species. For example, take the International Highland Cattle Show held in Glasgow‘s Pollock Country Park. With over a 100 highland cows on show from over 30 breeders, the show was the biggest in Britain this year.
A man who is devoted to nature and the scientific research of animals is Sir David Attenborough. After studying Zoology at College, Attenborough presented over 20 television shows, published over 16 books, received countless awards and has even been knighted for his extensive work involving animals!
A Zoology degree is great for those who want to work in the open air and can lead to any number of careers such as zoo keeping or even presenting like the man himself! Glasgow University offers several Zoology degrees, so to see what you could be studying, check out http://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/zoology/ for more info.
