Everybody loves music. Music can lift your mood, frame a memory or rock your socks clean off! Whether you want to be a performer like Nikitta, manager – like Simon Cowell or the writer like Jay Z there are lots of ways to get involved in music.
There are many types of music from R&B, Hip Hop, Rock, Dance, Classical, Pop, Metal and Musical Theatre.
One of the many ways to make a career in music is to brave the icy wrath of Simon Cowell and go on X Factor like Glasgow’s very own Nikitta. Although she finished in sixth place, her debut single is penned in for late 2010 and promises to be a hit; making Nikitta another X Factor success story. Another act to face Cowell and co were The MacDonald Brothers. The Ayrshire duo eventually finished fourth and have gone on to release four albums. The X Factor is great for people who would like to be a singer! Those with the creative touch can write and sing your own songs like Lady Gaga – Although you could pay me fortunes and I wouldn’t wear those strange outfits, would you?
You don’t need to be a performer to be involved in music and many of the most important people work behind the scenes. A Show Production Manager is an important role as this is the person who organises and keeps everything running smoothly. The show production manager usually works in musical theatre and is involved in management of the technical side of a production, as-well as bossing people around… in a nice way.
Glasgow’s Tramway Theatre has a history of making ground-breaking productions and is a good venue for musicals. The Tramway also offers the chance to get involved by taking part in workshops and courses. You can do this at any age and is excellent experience for anyone looking for a career in musical theatre. http://www.tramway.org/
Working in Music can also have you involved in TV shows. Everything on TV has music and some shows such as the American musical comedy-drama series Glee is written around the music. Glee was written by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan who came up with the idea for Glee based on his own experience as a member of a show choir. You could be the next Ryan Murphy – well you never know!
If you want to swat up on music you can study Music Technology Degree courses at Glasgow Caledonian University. A degree in music can be helpful if you’re looking for a career in music. Graduates from these courses have gone on to work in many parts of the music and multimedia industries such as broadcasting, sound engineering, development and multimedia development while others work in related industries like computing and networking.
