Working as a receptionist is one way to make sure that every day of your life involves a smile. I’m not referring to girls only here! Nobody wants to deal with a miserable receptionist, guy or girl. So some might say, the first qualification of working in Customer Service is being able to put on a good smile.
Even if you’re faking that smile, your body will release natural endorphins that increase your genuine happiness. Ok, what I guess I’m trying to say is that being a receptionist will positively affect your happiness! Great start!
But some people might view it as quite a lonely job. Sure you see people and speak to people on the phone but it’s usually just clients and customers and well, you’re likely to feel pretty singled out from the rest of the business, right?
...Well, not really. The reality is totally different. The important thing to realise is that receptionists are always part of a team, big or small. The importance of their role in particular is vital to any company’s reputation – the Receptionist is the first contact a new customer will see, so not just any numbskull will fit the bill.
Having said that, if you work hard anyone can achieve what’s required; as long as you can read and write and smile of-course. Oh and there is one more vital element to being a receptionist...Technology!
For example, they often have to operate switchboards – to put the right call through to the right room / office – and have you ever seen one of those people type a letter? Good grief! Their hands become a blur on the keyboard, eyes remain fixed on the screen (so they don’t even look at their fingers typing) and before you know it the page is complete. It looks like they’ve been possessed by Superman!
Ok, ok, ok, I’m exaggerating a little bit. But most receptionists I’ve met are pretty speedy at the old typing thing. I don’t think it develops over night either; I’m probably referring to the really old receptionists with tiny spectacles who have been typing on typewriters since nineteen-canteen.
But they say that computers are the future and our generation is definitely going to be alright with that! Particularly if you want to be a receptionist, keeping up with technology couldn’t be a better idea. Most jobs these days need you to have a basic knowledge of Word and Excel but as a receptionist you never know what crazy internal system you’ll end up having to work with every day. So like I said, keep these skills fresh because as technology develops, so does the job.
Visit the following websites who give you some great course options if you’re considering this type of career:
Most colleges seem to offer something ideal when thinking about training to become a receptionist. These courses are usually focused on administration skills so if you’ve already picked that sort of subject at school, stick at it! It’s just what you need.
Oh and before I forget to mention...there’s plenty of variety in the locations you can work in – not just offices. What about a Dentist or Doctor’s reception. Or working as a receptionist at W.A.G infested Chelsea FC or for some top hotel in London where all the real talent goes after a hot night out. In fact, even better, I’m pretty sure all the best clubs and hotspots across the country need people to do reception work. Not to mention big event organisers like http://www.periperi.co.uk – they’ll definitely have a few Reception jobs for the ambitious, organised and smiley individuals to keep their prestigious client base happy.
