Imagine being a scientist. It definitely sounds like the smartest job to have, but remember science is not just for nerds! Just think about all of the amazing stuff that we use in our daily lives, it’s all thanks to science, and there isn’t a single area or concept on this earth that hasn’t been scientifically questioned.
You might be interested in the elements and discovering how one chemical reacts with another (maybe you just love to see things explode!) Or you might like to sound like the smarty pants who can explain how everything happens, like why water doesn’t fall out of a bucket if you swing it round fast enough.
And everything is connected when you think about looking after life on this planet. Doctors for instance, don’t just need to know a lot about biology but also medicine, environmental factors and lots more. Ever wondered who came up with the cure for Swine Flu...? They probably got paid big bucks as well as getting to save thousands of lives...that’s some achievement!
Just look at Paul Haggan...he is a Professor of Tropical Diseases. Wow! That must take a truly deep understanding of pretty much everything I’ve mentioned so far. And you’ve got to hand it to him, without people like that the human race would have been extinct long ago.
And science doesn’t just stop on earth! For thousands of years man has been scientifically developing his understanding of greater space, not just the Milky Way, but other galaxies like Andromeda – incredible!
But don’t get confused...there is one scientific-sounding concept that doesn’t really come into play here; ‘scientology’, it might sound clever, but it’s really a totally different thing all together. So I wouldn’t really go to Tom Cruise for advice on what we are talking about.
Of-course if you are interested in star gazing there are lots of places you can go – besides looking up at night with a telescope! The Glasgow Science Centre has lots of exciting gadgets and also the IMAX Cinema. So if star gazing is your thing, check out what’s on at the Science Centre because it regularly holds special shows in its own Planetarium which are totally mind blowing! As well as all of that there is plenty of other stuff to keep you busy for the whole day, little and big gadget things that either teach you a lot or leave you a little baffled...bags of fun either way!
So these days there’s no excuse! Get into science, there’s lots to think about and an entire universe to explore. Not to mention plenty of great college and university courses dedicated to all of the specific areas of science. As a starting place, why not check out what colleges like Reid Kerr, James Watt and Cardonald College have to offer (just to name a few) and pretty much all of these courses lead to university degrees....so what are you waiting for?
