Well, it took me a wee while to get my head around what this course actually is, social scientists, but basically, it’s all about learning how people live, why certain things happen in society and understanding behaviours. So if you’re really inquisitive (read nosy!), interested in why racism exists, or why we listen to the music that we do, then Sociology could be right up your street!
The course at Glasgow University is joined with Anthropology, and will allow students to take classes in subjects such as:
Sounding good? Alongside several other choices, these classes allow you, the students of the future to choose classes which let you tailor your degree to suit your own interests. Yeah, I thought that might get your attention! Check out http://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/lbss/sociologyandanthropology/ to find out more.
Strathclyde University also offers a course in Sociology, which you can find out more about at http://gs.strath.ac.uk/content/view/4/9/. As I’ve said before, career seeker, in the History link (check it out, it’s also attached to Richard’s page), Strathclyde allows students to combine subjects if they choose. First year Social Sciences (The Faculty which Sociology comes under) students will study 4 subjects in first year, before deciding what to specialise in. Sociology could be studied alongside politics, as behaviours in society are often linked to politics, or history, to see how social behaviours have changed over the years. Whatever your interest in today’s society is, whether it be why people listen to the music they do (especially if it’s really bad!), or what makes people violent, then you’ll find something on any Sociology course to interest you. For all you nosy people like me out there, check out this site to find out more about what sociology is: http://www.sociology.org.uk/
