Those of you who are health conscious will be well aware that health and fitness is becoming a really big thing in the press, what with obesity and all these celebrity dieters. Well, I’m here to tell you to ignore all the scare mongering stuff in the papers and just concentrate on keeping fit and having fun. Get rid of all those images of running for miles and miles every day, red faced and sweaty to keep fit! Do you like football? Swimming? Whatever sport you love, why not get more involved? Or if you’re not sporty at all, try something new! As we discussed on the Leisure Centres page, there is loads out there to try! If you like swimming, why not go a few days a week after school, or get some mates together for a kick about? If running is your thing, why not join a running club, where everyone runs together for encouragement. If you’re new to sport, just take it one step at a time, get together with some friends and make it fun! Soon you’ll be super fit and feeling the benefits, I guarantee it!
What do you eat? No point in coming out of the gym or the swimming pool, to eat a fish supper! We all love having a curry on a Saturday night, or a wee bar of chocolate but that’s ok. As long as it’s just on a Saturday and not every day of the week! I used to be a really unhealthy eater, and when it got to the stage that it was causing me health problems, I got my act together and started learning about food.
Healthy food doesn’t have to be a lettuce leaf, as a lot of people think! Like sweets? Try fruit smoothies, which are absolutely delicious! Love chips? Oven bake them instead of frying! You don’t have to give up all the things you like (I know for a fact that giving up chocolate is a physical impossibility for most of us!), just eat a bit less of them, try some new foods (like sweet potatoes and parsnips for example, which are really tasty) and getting moving a bit! It’s not all hard work, forcing yourself out of bed at 4am to go to the gym (!). Keeping fit and healthy is really important, because you know what they say: A healthy body makes a healthy mind! And for all you brain boxes out there, a healthy mind is a really important thing!
