Hotel managers are responsible for the planning, finance and organisation of a hotel, motel or similar establishment. They need to make sure that everything runs smoothly so that guests enjoy their stay.
What personal qualities and skills are best suited to this industry?
An essential skill is being able to multi-task as you may have to perform a number of tasks at the same time, which also means you have to be well organized. People skills are important because you will have to deal with both customers and staff, keeping them all happy at once. Running a hotel is like running a business, so you will have to have lots of energy and enjoy working to targets.
How much money can I earn?
The money you can earn as a hotel manager depends greatly on the size of the hotel and your duties. Salaries are in the range of £14,500 - £17,500 a year, rising to £22,000 - £28,000. Top earners can make around £41,000 a year. Working hours can be varied and long, although in the average week a hotel manager will work 40hours.
What qualifications do I need?
You can become a hotel manager by working your way up. However, it is more usual to study for appropriate qualifications first.
For entry to a degree course in Hospitality, Hotel and Catering Management the minimum requirement is 3 Highers (A-C) plus Standard Grades (1-3) in 2 other subjects.
For entry to a Higher National Certificate/Higher National Diploma course in hospitality, hotel and catering management the usual requirement is 1/2 Highers and Standard Grades in 2/3 other subjects.
