It’s hard for us to think of a time without Ingvar Kamprad, …come on, you know him… that Swedish bloke who gave us Ikea.
In keeping with his own philosophy, I’m obviously under-stating the achievements of the man who had made it his mission to keep things simple. A chair without frills, padding, patterns, bells and bobbles is, after all still a chair! But didn’t he do well!!
From a young age pedalling to his neighbours selling matches off the back of his bike, he has driven that ethic to create a multi-million business with over 53,000 staff, 150 stores in 26 countries. Phew! It’s an amazing story…click here and read it. Honestly, it’s very interesting and motivating… I speak honestly as it’s only 1 page because hey, that’s quite long enough to get to the point!
The store in Braehead, Glasgow where we were invited to hold our first DARE! on the Road event was sensational.
Gina Jones, Ikea at Braehead’s Environmental Specialist became involved not just for her chatty, friendly manner and genuine interest in her company, but also because the environment is something she cares about. And so should we all. Could we miss out Holyrood Secondary School being shown around one of the world’s top environmentally responsible businesses? I think not! Did you know that everything within Ikea is recycled… every single piece… your hot-dog paper, your bed packaging, even those cursed, fiddly metal straps that keeps the cardboard around your “Kongsvik” (four poster bedframe for those not Ikea fluent!) How can you recycle them?!
Each “co-worker” starts within the business with responsibility being put you from day one. Gina herself started in Ikea 6 years ago in a part-time in the Bedroom department (well, it would have to be) and then moving upwards and onwards through the business into the eagle-eyed Risk Department which includes spotting shoplifters, and then progressing into the Environmental division. No day is the same as Gina’s not only in the shop itself but is involved with local schools and charities where Ikea donate products and various items to support local communities.
When you are competent in your role, you train the rest (how obvious!) and if you want to work abroad… pick a country and if the opportunity arises then you can be transferred with Ikea picking up the tab. Can someone hand me my passport please?
To come into the business… Ruth to finish
Just before I finish… Danielle, did you manage to get the shelf you were looking for?
From starting within the business, each is given responsibility for something, it may be the all starting at the same level and working through the business. Very fast promotional options wearing the same clothes.
