The day never quite went the way I intended it to go but when we were in the careful hands of Paul Slater, Jim Mac and his team, I should have known better than to think that was going to be a “normal” visit.

During my pursuit of Paul, I’d been given information that he was out of the country in China. My idea of him under the cosh, sad, alone, trudging through steamy alleyways, dodging rickshaws in search of the Holy Grail could not have been further from the truth.

On meeting the owner of the “World’s Largest Menswear Store, we were then bedazzled with the travels of the management team touring China, Milan and Ireland to source the best fabrics, suits, ties, shoes, to display within Slater’s 25 outlets throughout the UK.

As you can see, a career in retail does not just mean stacking shelves...
