DARE! On the Road

The Real Radio phenomenon that is Robin ( Galloway) and Cat (Harvey) came through Ikea, Braehead like a Force 10 gale!

To view movies you need to be a member and Log-in or register for access

Showing us the chemistry that has made them such a success, they laughed and joked, exposing the good and grumpy celebrities they have met – the snogging of Shane Ward (photographs please, Cat!), Katie Tunstall, The Proclaimers and the Sugababes, to when the “aff their heid” Glasgow public was asked what should Cat ask Prince Philip when sitting beside him at a function she was attending, she – in true Cat Harvie style - asked if the Queen made good mince and tatties!! Is there no end to their madness….

The answer is yes as the hush came over the room when we learned it was past their bed time of the usual 8 pm as they had to get up at 4am for the next day’s show (4AM!!)

It’s obviously not all turning up and looking glam. As 2 of the Real Radio team of 8, our comedy duo when the show is over prepare for the following day’s show by researching through the papers for stories and gossip that will have us chuckling in our cheerios to kick start our day… the competitions… the phone-in’s, the time-checks, and road conjestion…the news…. all delivered seamlessly (although Cat’s infectious chatter sometimes making Robin nervous!) that keeps them top of their game…which they are with the listener numbers and awards to prove it!

There are others in the team, the “music anorak” that just chooses the music they play (is that a dream job or what!!), the newsreader, the technicians to make sure nothing breaks down, and others who all play their part in this winning collaboration. And we love each and every one of you for doing it.

Hey, almost forgot, what about the Real Radio Renegade… show us the money and who it he? … would they tell us, would they heck as like! Even the temptation of the Dime bars and crisps would not loosen their tightly closed lips! Bah!

Okay, we’re hooked, so where do we sign…?

Interestingly, Robin and Cat came via two different routes:-

Robin, a young, budding deejay with a passion for music, taping from the radio in his bedroom (remember, no Windows, Apple Macs and ipods in ye olden days!!), practising the talk-overs and the links whilst continually knocking on radio companies’doors until one opened. Doing it for nothing for the experience, he proved himself and was given a slot from midnight until 5am then worked hard to make it to the big time – the breakfast slot.

Cat came through the ranks by undertaking not one but 2 Glasgow University degrees (not just a pretty, but a clever face too!), and armed with qualifications to show her determination to succeed in the industry, got her break working through the newspaper, then television with Tam Cowan, then (Ruth to finish)

But nowadays, with so much competition, you need to stand out from the rest and businesses want to know that you are passionate about their industry so as much as you can show them that you are serious about your choice of career the better…and overall the education / qualification / degree route as well as knocking on doors is the best approach.

As Robin said “if you are determined and think you have what it takes, keep going, knock on doors, email your details to the Production Managers… offer to work for free (yes, you heard right.. . for free!) to get in, to be part of the company gaining experience of what the job, the business, the industry is about and learning your craft from watching those who are already doing the job.

Not even the vision that stills haunts me of Robin in his Borat swimming costume has put me off what seems to be a fantastic career…
