Radio Presenter for Real Radio
Favourite children's TV show when you were growing up?
Camberwick Green. Always wanted to be Captain Flack of Pippin Fort. Oh and Mrs Honeyman the village gossip was hot!
Star sign?
Sagittarius. Same as Frank Sinatra.
Favourite class when at school?
Gym. Always got a note to be excused.
Is Big Brother good or total rubbish?
Total rubbish. Stick with The Real Big House at 08:30 every Friday on Real Radio.
What is your best knock knock joke?
Knock Knock? Whose there?
Laptop or desktop or do you care?
Laptop every time. A dinky wee Vaio off eBay for me.
Fight night! Who would you love to challenge?
Vince McMahon from WWE (RIP).
Do you believe in the theory of evolution?
Yes. Darwin is the man and no monkey business.
Best money saving tip of the month?
Barter. Even in McDonalds, try and get them down by haggling. Works every time.
If you could choose a new middle name what would it be?
Tarquin.
1. Is this really your 23rd year in radio?
Yes I’m afraid it is…March 1983 I made my debut on Aberdeen’s Northsound Radio. They’re the ones to blame.
2. Which other stations have you worked on?
Along with Northsound, Clyde, Century, Piccadilly and Jazz.
3. You presented some TV as well, did you enjoy that?
Not nearly as much as Radio! I’ve got the perfect face for radio. I did some bits for Granada, Sky and Discovery! I think some people are suited to TV…I’m not really one of them, though I did benefit from the experience of reading the news on Grampian Television, especially during the Piper Alpha and Lockerbie disasters. Those memories will live with me forever.
4. You’ve won a few awards for your radio presenting!
Yes for my sins, I have a Gold New York Award, a Sony and four BRAs!! (British Radio Awards).
5. You’re married with kids, what do they think of your exploits on radio?
My wife Tracy thinks it is juvenile drivel and just like my Mum when she was alive, wonders when I’m going to get a real job!! My kids think it is pretty cool though!
6. Would you encourage them to follow in your footsteps?
I wouldn’t actively, but if they wanted to I’d certainly give them some advice! It’s the greatest job in the world, but it can be fickle. There’s no such thing as a job for life and if the ratings drop….you do to! My middle child is showing an interest already and can mix better than a food processor. Totally shows me up.
7. Would you have some advice for any budding radio presenters?
You’ve got to be yourself, the listener knows if you’re being genuine or not. The trap that most fall into is they try and sound like somebody else who is already on the radio…..Me? I’ve been doing it so long now, I sound like Marconi.
8. This is the first time you’ve worked with a team, how different is that from solo shows?
Very, very different! At first it took a lot of getting used to. But with my co-host on the Real breakfast show Cat Harvey, producer Baz and news I think we make a fine team!
9. The wind ups are popular, are they easy to do?
They can take forever to record, they are always done in advance and can take an enormous amount of time to get right. The Hector and Old Mrs G ones can be slightly easier than the nominated ones, but for every 100 that are sent in, maybe only 50 are doable, and only 10 might make it to air. It is a long, but worthwhile process. They’re certainly the most talked about on air and more characters are planned to follow Cecil and his Boaby.
10. Two years ago you started a weekly column in The Scottish Sun, how has that gone?
You’d have to ask the editor! It seems to be going really well, with lots of great feedback. I feel it compliments the show and a lot of what we talk about between 05:00 and 10:00 is used in the column. It’s a look back at the week’s news and when there’s an action packed news week, then it’s easy to write, but it takes a lot longer when there’s not much happening! But I’m not complaining, having your own column in a national newspaper is a dream come true
